What Is a Belt Bucket Elevator?

A belt bucket elevator is a continuous vertical conveying system that uses a belt fitted with evenly spaced buckets to lift bulk materials. Material enters the buckets at the boot section, travels upward with the belt and is discharged at the head by centrifugal force or gravity.

Compared with a chain bucket elevator, the belt-driven design generally offers smoother operation, higher conveying speeds, lower noise and a lighter moving system. It is commonly used for cement, raw meal, fly ash, limestone powder, fertilizer granules and other powdered or fine-grained materials.

Depending on the required capacity, lifting height and material characteristics, the elevator can be equipped with a fabric-reinforced rubber belt or a steel-cord belt. Bulk density, particle size, temperature, moisture content and flowability should also be considered to reduce belt misalignment, slippage and material fallback.

Belt Bucket Elevator Applications and Industries

Belt bucket elevators are suitable for cement, raw meal, fly ash, limestone powder, gypsum powder, mineral powders, fertilizer granules, grain and feed ingredients. They are particularly effective for powders, fine particles and free-flowing bulk materials requiring smooth and enclosed vertical conveying.

These elevators are widely used in cement plants, building-material production, mineral processing, fertilizer manufacturing, grain handling, feed production and bulk-storage systems. Fabric-reinforced rubber belts or steel-cord belts can be selected according to the required capacity, lifting height, material temperature and bulk density.

Hot, sticky, oversized or highly abrasive materials require further evaluation of the belt and elevator structure. For certain heavy-duty applications, a chain bucket elevator may be a more suitable option.

Main Advantages of Belt Bucket Elevators

High Conveying Capacity: A belt bucket elevator can operate continuously at relatively high speeds. By matching the bucket volume, spacing and belt speed, it can meet high-capacity vertical conveying requirements in cement, mineral-processing and grain-handling systems.

Smooth and Quiet Operation: The flexible elevator belt produces relatively low mechanical impact and vibration. Compared with a chain-driven design, a belt bucket elevator generally operates more quietly and smoothly, making it suitable for continuous production.

Suitable for Higher Lifts: Fabric-reinforced rubber belts or steel-cord belts can be selected according to the lifting height, operating load and material conditions. Steel-cord belts offer high tensile strength and low elongation for high-lift and large-capacity applications.

Enclosed and Dust-Controlled Conveying: The enclosed casing helps reduce material spillage and dust emissions during vertical conveying. Dust-collection connections can also be incorporated into the inlet and discharge areas.

Relatively Low Maintenance Requirements: The belt traction system has a relatively simple structure and does not require chain lubrication. Belt misalignment, slippage and speed sensors can be added to detect abnormal operation and reduce unplanned downtime.

A belt bucket elevator mainly consists of an elevator belt, buckets, head pulley, boot pulley, drive unit, take-up system, enclosed casing and safety-monitoring devices. These components should be matched to the conveying capacity, lifting height and material characteristics to support stable, continuous operation.

Elevator Belt

The elevator belt carries the combined load of the buckets and conveyed material. Fabric-reinforced rubber belts or steel-cord belts can be selected according to the lifting height and operating load. Tensile strength, elongation, abrasion resistance and temperature resistance directly affect conveying performance and belt service life.

Buckets and Fasteners

The buckets collect, lift and discharge the material. Their volume, profile, spacing and material are selected according to particle size, flowability and required capacity. Special bucket bolts and fasteners secure the buckets to the belt and help prevent loosening during operation.

Head Pulley and Drive Unit

The motor and gearbox rotate the head pulley, which transfers power to the elevator belt through friction. The correct pulley diameter, surface lagging and drive power help maintain sufficient traction and reduce belt slippage.

Boot Pulley and Take-Up System

The boot pulley guides the belt around the lower section of the elevator. The take-up system compensates for belt elongation and maintains the required tension, helping improve belt tracking and reduce abnormal wear.

Casing and Maintenance Access

The enclosed casing provides a protected path for the belt and buckets while helping control dust and material spillage. Inspection doors, clean-out openings, observation ports and maintenance platforms can be incorporated for easier inspection and component replacement.

Safety-Monitoring Devices

Optional devices can monitor belt misalignment, speed, slippage, blockage and bearing temperature. Backstops and motor-overload protection may also be included to identify operating problems and protect the equipment.
